Within one of the world's most famous – and most prestigious – wine-producing regions, the city of Bordeaux only gets better as a wining and dining destination of its own. Let our Bordeaux Ambassador take you on a tour of the top spots for wine lovers. And guess what: you don't just have to drink Bordeaux! Alongside the historical châteaux, you'll find wines made by young, exciting producers from near and far.
In good weather, it is lovely to see the terrace finally out on the freshly refurbed Place du Marché des Chartrons – the hallmark of its eponymous neighbourhood and once the historic heart of the Bordeaux wine trade. Facing the octagonal nineteenth-century market building, Gabarre is the brainchild of three friends: brothers Maxence and Valentin Gicquel, and chef Joris Lapierre. These young associates have taken over a prime spot on the plaza, transforming a former cocktail bar into a sleek, modern bistro and wine bar.
On Monday 9 March, Star Wine List’s Krister Bengtsson was joined by incoming Paris Ambassador Alicia Dorey at KEDGE Wine School to announce the winners in this season’s French wine list competition. They presented 10 Gold Stars to venues spanning the capital, over to Bourg-en-Bresse in the east, Cannes in the south, Bordeaux in the west and Ploemeur in the northwest corner – this geographical diversity was picked up on by judge Pascaline Lepeltier once the jury had chosen its winners.
